ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Blessed Sacrament.

I love You above all things and I desire You in my soul.

Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally,

Come at least spiritually into my heart.

As though You were already there,

I embrace You and unite myself wholly to You;

Permit not that I should ever be separated from You. Amen.

First Letter to the Corinthians 4,1-5.

Brothers and sisters : Thus should one regard us : as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God.
Now it is of course required of stewards that they be found trustworthy.
It does not concern me in the least that I be judged by you or any human tribunal; I do not even pass judgment on myself;
I am not conscious of anything against me, but I do not thereby stand acquitted; the one who judges me is the Lord.
Therefore, do not make any judgment before the appointed time, until the Lord comes, for he will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will manifest the motives of our hearts, and then everyone will receive praise from God.

Psalms 37(36),3-4.5-6.27-28.39-40.

Trust in the LORD and do good,
that you may dwell in the land and be fed in security.
Take delight in the LORD,
and he will grant you your heart’s requests.

Commit to the LORD your way;
trust in him, and he will act.
He will make justice dawn for you like the light;
bright as the noonday shall be your vindication.

Turn from evil and do good,
that you may abide forever;
For the LORD loves what is right,
and forsakes not his faithful ones.

The salvation of the just is from the LORD;
He is their refuge in time of distress.
The LORD helps them and delivers them;
He delivers them from the wicked and saves them,
because they take refuge in him.

First Letter to the Corinthians 3,18-23.

Brothers and sisters : Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you considers himself wise in this age, let him become a fool, so as to become wise.
For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God, for it is written: “He catches the wise in their own ruses,”
and again: “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.”
So let no one boast about human beings, for everything belongs to you,
Paul or Apollos or Kephas, or the world or life or death, or the present or the future: all belong to you,
and you to Christ, and Christ to God.

The LORD’s are the earth and its fullness;
the world and those who dwell in it.
For he founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers.

Who can ascend the mountain of the LORD?
or who may stand in his holy place?
One whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean,
who desires not what is vain.

He shall receive a blessing from the LORD,
a reward from God his savior.
Such is the race that seeks for him,
that seeks the face of the God of Jacob.

Wednesday of the Twenty-second week in Ordinary Time

2 September 2020

First Letter to the Corinthians 3,1-9.

Brothers and sisters, I could not talk to you as spiritual people, but as fleshly people, as infants in Christ.
I fed you milk, not solid food, because you were unable to take it. Indeed, you are still not able, even now,
for you are still of the flesh. While there is jealousy and rivalry among you, are you not of the flesh, and behaving in an ordinary human way?
Whenever someone says, “I belong to Paul,” and another, “I belong to Apollos,” are you not merely human?
What is Apollos, after all, and what is Paul? Ministers through whom you became believers, just as the Lord assigned each one.
I planted, Apollos watered, but God caused the growth.
Therefore, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who causes the growth.
The one who plants and the one who waters are equal, and each will receive wages in proportion to his labor.
For we are God’s co-workers; you are God’s field, God’s building.

Psalms 33(32),12-13.14-15.20-21.

Blessed the nation whose God is the LORD,
the people he has chosen for his own inheritance.
From heaven the LORD looks down;
He sees all mankind.

From his fixed throne he beholds
All who dwell on the earth,
He who fashioned the heart of each,
He who knows all their works.

Our soul waits for the LORD,
who is our help and our shield,
For in him our hearts rejoice;
In his holy name we trust.

Tuesday of the Twenty-second week in Ordinary Time

1 September 2020

First Letter to the Corinthians 2,10b-16.

Brothers and sisters: The Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.
Among men, who knows what pertains to the man
except his spirit that is within?
We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit that is from God, so that we may understand the things freely given us by God.
And we speak about them not with words taught by human wisdom, but with words taught by the Spirit, describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms.
Now the natural man does not accept what pertains to the Spirit of God, for to him it is foolishness, and he cannot understand it, because it is judged spiritually.
The one who is spiritual, however, can judge everything but is not subject to judgment by anyone.
For “who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to counsel him?” But we have the mind of Christ.

Psalms 145(144),8-9.10-11.12-13ab.13cd-14.

The LORD is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and of great kindness.
The LORD is good to all
and compassionate toward all his works.

Let all your works give you thanks, O LORD,
and let your faithful ones bless you.
Let them discourse of the glory of your Kingdom
and speak of your might.

Making known to men your might
and the glorious splendor of your Kingdom.
Your Kingdom is a Kingdom for all ages,
and your dominion endures through all generations.

The LORD is faithful in all his words
and holy in all his works.
The LORD lifts up all who are falling
and raises up all who are bowed down.

For I resolved to know nothing while I was with you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.
I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling,
and my message and my proclamation were not with persuasive (words of) wisdom, but with a demonstration of spirit and power,

Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary Time

30 August 2020

Book of Jeremiah 20,7-9.

You duped me , O LORD, and I let myself be duped; you were too strong for me, and you triumphed. All the day I am an object of laughter; everyone mocks me. Whenever I speak, I must cry out, violence and outrage is my message; The word of the LORD has brought me derision and reproach all the day. I say to myself, I will not mention him, I will speak in his name no more. But then it becomes like fire burning in my heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in, I cannot endure it.

Letter to the Romans 12,1-2.

I urge you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, your spiritual worship.
Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing and perfect.

Psalms 63(62),2.3-4.5-6.8-9.

O God, you are my God whom I seek;
for you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts
like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water.

Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary
to see your power and your glory,
for your kindness is a greater good than life;
my lips shall glorify you.

Thus will I bless you while I live;
lifting up my hands, I will call upon your name.
As with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied,
and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you.

You indeed are my help,
and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy.
My soul clings fast to you;
your right hand upholds me.

For I am the one who today makes you a fortified city, a pillar of iron, a wall of bronze, against the whole land: against Judah’s kings and princes, its priests and the people of the land.

First Letter to the Corinthians 1,17-25.

For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with the wisdom of human eloquence, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its meaning.
The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the learning of the learned I will set aside.”
Where is the wise one? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made the wisdom of the world foolish?
For since in the wisdom of God the world did not come to know God through wisdom, it was the will of God through the foolishness of the proclamation to save those who have faith.
For Jews demand signs and Greeks look for wisdom,
but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles,
but to those who are called, Jews and Greeks alike, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
For the foolishness of God is wiser than human wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than human strength.

Psalms 33(32),1-2.4-5.10ab.11.

Exult, you just, in the LORD;
Praise from the upright is fitting.
Give thanks to the LORD on the harp;
With the ten stringed lyre chant his praises

For upright is the word of the LORD,
and all his works are trustworthy.
He loves justice and right;
of the kindness of the LORD the earth is full.

The LORD brings to nought the plans of nations;
He foils the designs of peoples.
But the plan of the LORD stands forever;
The design of his heart, through all generations.

First Letter to the Corinthians 1,1-9.

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Sosthenes our brother,
to the church of God that is in Corinth, to you who have been sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be holy, with all those everywhere who call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours.
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus,
that in him you were enriched in every way, with all discourse and all knowledge,
as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you,
so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
He will keep you firm to the end, irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus (Christ).
God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

Generation after generation praises your works
and proclaims your might.
They speak of the splendor of your glorious majesty
and tell of your wondrous works.

and declare your greatness.
They publish the fame of your abundant goodness

Second Letter to the Thessalonians 3,6-10.16-18.

We instruct you, brothers, in the name of (our) Lord Jesus Christ,to shun any brother who conducts himself in a disorderly way and not according to the tradition they received from us.
For you know how one must imitate us. For we did not act in a disorderly way among you,
nor did we eat food received free from anyone. On the contrary, in toil and drudgery, night and day we worked, so as not to burden any of you.
Not that we do not have the right. Rather, we wanted to present ourselves as a model for you, so that you might imitate us.
In fact, when we were with you, we instructed you that if anyone was unwilling to work, neither should that one eat.
May the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.
This greeting is in my own hand, Paul’s. This is the sign in every letter; this is how I write.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with all of you.

Second Letter to the Thessalonians 2,1-3a.14-17.

We ask you, brothers and sisters, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and our assembling with him,
not to be shaken out of your minds suddenly, or to be alarmed either by a “spirit,” or by an oral statement, or by a letter allegedly from us to the effect that the day of the Lord is at hand.
Let no one deceive you in any way.
To this end he has (also) called you through our gospel to possess the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.
May our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting encouragement and good hope through his grace,
encourage your hearts and strengthen them in every good deed and word.

Book of Revelation 21,9b-14.

The angel spoke to me, saying, “Come here. I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”
He took me in spirit to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God.
It gleamed with the splendor of God. Its radiance was like that of a precious stone, like jasper, clear as crystal.
It had a massive, high wall, with twelve gates where twelve angels were stationed and on which names were inscribed, (the names) of the twelve tribes of the Israelites.
There were three gates facing east, three north, three south, and three west.
The wall of the city had twelve courses of stones as its foundation, on which were inscribed the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb.

Book of Isaiah 22,19-23.

Thus says the LORD to Shebna, master of the palace: “I will thrust you from your office and pull you down from your station.
On that day I will summon my servant Eliakim, son of Hilkiah;
I will clothe him with your robe, and gird him with your sash, and give over to him your authority. He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah.
I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut, when he shuts, no one shall open.
I will fix him like a peg in a sure spot, to be a place of honor for his family.”

Letter to the Romans 11,33-36.

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable his ways!
“For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor?”
“Or who has given him anything that he may be repaid?”
For from him and through him and for him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.

A Silver Lining

Weekly  from North Sydney Catholics

22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time – THIS SUNDAY

The gospels are full of challenging questions. In the opening chapter of John’s gospel, Jesus turns to two of John the Baptist’s disciple who are following him and asks, “What do you want?” When two men who are blind approach Jesus on the road, he asks them, “What do you want me to do for you?” When this disciples are in a boat in the middle of a storm and Jesus’ calms that storm, he looks at them and asks, “Why were you afraid?” When Jesus is trying to teach his disciples about the cost of discipleship, they ask him, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” Jesus even asks the disciples of Emmaus, discouraged by the passion and death of Jesus, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”

Cardinal Walter Kasper, in his book Jesus the Christ, comments on the question in this weekend’s gospel. “The decisive question for Christianity has always been ‘Who do you think Christ is? Who is he?’ Answers to this question are very varied, not only in later history but even in the New Testament. Jesus has many names in the New Testament. He is called Christ, Prophet, Son of man, Servant of God, High Priest, Savior, Lord (Kyrios), Son of God. Evidently no single title is adequate to indicate who Jesus is. Jesus is the man who fits no formula.”

Christ’s identity is a mystery. He is like a beautiful stained glass window made up of so many different colored pieces of glass. This mystery is something we can participate in but never fully understand. There are clues to his identity in the four gospels. We see Jesus as the son of a carpenter brought up in Nazareth. He is a storyteller par excellence. His stories challenge us and fill us with hope. He is a healer. He restores sight to the blind. He cleanses lepers. He returns the use of their legs to the paralyzed. He is a Teacher—on the Mount of Beatitudes, on the Mountain of Transfiguration, and as he dies on the cross with some of the last words on his lips being forgiveness. He is this and much more.

At my brother’s funeral last March, four of his five sons gave brief eulogies in which each of them tried to answer the question about who their father was to them. They gave four incredibly different portraits of a very human and very good man. And my brother’s oldest son, who chose not to speak, gave his own portrait of his father through his silence.

Who were you taught Christ was as you went through years of Religious Education? Who did you experience Christ was when you went to high school and college? Who did you experience Christ was when you got married? Who did you experience Christ was when your first child was born and you had your son or daughter baptized? Who did you experience Christ was when your marriage weakened or dissolved? Who did you experience Christ was when your brother or sister or child got caught in addiction or became alienated from your family? Who did you experience Christ was when you discovered that your aging parent had Alzheimer’s or when they were put in Hospice and died?

This weekend the Christ of the Gospels asks each of us, “Who do you say that I am?” Our answer will depend on our ability to find him in all things—in the scriptures, in the sacraments, in the faith community, in suffering and joy, in challenges and blessings. So Jesus asks us first—“Who do you say that I am?” After we’ve responded, perhaps we can be brave enough to ask this question of him, “Who do you say that I am, Lord?” And listen to his response.

Book of Ezekiel 43,1-7a.

The angel led me to the gate which faces the east,
and there I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east. I heard a sound like the roaring of many waters, and the earth shone with his glory.
The vision was like that which I had seen when he came to destroy the city, and like that which I had seen by the river Chebar. I fell prone
as the glory of the LORD entered the temple by way of the gate which faces the east,
but spirit lifted me up and brought me to the inner court. And I saw that the temple was filled with the glory of the LORD.
Then I heard someone speaking to me from the temple, while the man stood beside me.
The voice said to me: Son of man, this is where my throne shall be, this is where I will set the soles of my feet; here I will dwell among the children of Israel forever.

Psalms 85(84),9ab-10.11-12.13-14.

I will hear what God proclaims;
the LORD –for he proclaims peace to his people.
Near indeed is his salvation to those who fear him,
glory dwelling in our land.

Kindness and truth shall meet;
justice and peace shall kiss.
Truth shall spring out of the earth,
and justice shall look down from heaven.

The LORD himself will give his benefits;
our land shall yield its increase.
Justice shall walk before him,
and salvation, along the way of his steps.

NO SAINT – TODAY

Soul of Christ, sanctify me. Body of Christ, save me.

Blood of Christ, inebriate me.

Water from the side of Christ, wash me.

Passion of Christ, strengthen me.

O Good Jesus, hear me.

Within your wounds hide me.

Permit me not to be separated from you.

From the wicked foe, defend me.

At the hour of my death, call me and bid me come to you

That with your saints

I may praise you For ever and ever. Amen.

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Blessed Sacrament.

I love You above all things and I desire You in my soul.

Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally,

Come at least spiritually into my heart.

As though You were already there,

I embrace You and unite myself wholly to You;

Permit not that I should ever be separated from You. Amen.

Friday of the Twentieth week in Ordinary Time

21 August 2020

Book of Ezekiel 37,1-14.

The hand of the LORD came upon me, and he led me out in the spirit of the LORD and set me in the center of the plain, which was now filled with bones.
He made me walk among them in every direction so that I saw how many they were on the surface of the plain. How dry they were!
He asked me: Son of man, can these bones come to life? “Lord GOD,” I answered, “you alone know that.”
Then he said to me: Prophesy over these bones, and say to them: Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD!
Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: See! I will bring spirit into you, that you may come to life.
I will put sinews upon you, make flesh grow over you, cover you with skin, and put spirit in you so that you may come to life and know that I am the LORD.
I prophesied as I had been told, and even as I was prophesying I heard a noise; it was a rattling as the bones came together, bone joining bone.
I saw the sinews and the flesh come upon them, and the skin cover them, but there was no spirit in them.
Then he said to me: Prophesy to the spirit, prophesy, son of man, and say to the spirit: Thus says the Lord GOD: From the four winds come, O spirit, and breathe into these slain that they may come to life.
I prophesied as he told me, and the spirit came into them; they came alive and stood upright, a vast army.
Then he said to me: Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They have been saying, “Our bones are dried up, our hope is lost, and we are cut off.”
Therefore, prophesy and say to them: Thus says the Lord GOD: O my people, I will open your graves and have you rise from them, and bring you back to the land of Israel.
Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and have you rise from them, O my people!
I will put my spirit in you that you may live, and I will settle you upon your land; thus you shall know that I am the LORD. I have promised, and I will do it, says the LORD.

Psalms 107(106),2-3.4-5.6-7.8-9.

Let the redeemed of the LORD say,
those whom he has redeemed from the hand of the foe
and gathered from the lands,
from the east and the west, from the north and the south.

They went astray in the desert wilderness;
the way to an inhabited city they did not find.
Hungry and thirsty,
their life was wasting away within them.

They cried to the LORD in their distress;
from their straits he rescued them.
And he led them by a direct way
to reach an inhabited city.

Let them give thanks to the LORD for his mercy
and his wondrous deeds to the children of men,
because he satisfied the longing soul
and filled the hungry soul with good things.
